Ok this time of year is the only time i get to decorate and make good my care home, as most of the residents are at family etc, so this year its the front bed room, this room had built in wardrobes straight across the main wall.
It had many thicknessess of wall paper and boarder and some coats of the paper where painted as well.
Ok i like to take everything back to scratch when i do something.
So the whole room has to be stripped.
Carpet fixtures and wall paper all had to go.
When i do a project i will always get the plasterer in to skim the walls and ceiling, even if they look like they dont need doing, at least this way i get a nice new surface to paint and you get clean lines.

Ok this is the room stripped out and ready for plaster next week.

Oh the room is 14ft x13ft

Nice job, B.

How long did it take to strip the wallpaper and how did you do it?

Badger

Ok the, first stage was to get everything out.
Then i stripped the first layers of wallpaper of * dry* to reveil the underside gluey paper
wet this down soaked it in fact then pealed this off also, i used very soapy water and used the sudds, they soak in the paper pretty good.

Then i just went round with an big old scrapper and finished off the difficult bits and stubbern areas.

As you can see i have found some old damp areas, this is why its good to go all the way back so you can see what needs doing, and what needs fixing,  To be honest if you have a chimney you sometimes find damp.
So this needs to be treated before any plaster can go on.
There is a paint i will use to key this area and seal it before Big Dave my plasterer comes round.

Fag i can plaster but, these days buddy i leave it to the pros.  in my case Big Dave.  He is brill. more on him later.

Ok the room prep has cost me in time 8 hrs in total, it is now ready for Big Dave.

propertyfag

Cool!

Did the majority of it just simply peel off after soaking?

He keyed up the walls and ceiling with a strong pva glue, and covered cracks and other imperfaections with a plasterers tape, went round wall corners with beading and has drunk loads of tea !.

He has a tin of wd 40 with him, i will ask him what its for as i have no idea

Are you sure you want to know??

V

Badger

LOL
Ok i have asked him, and he made me feel very very small and stuuupid.
I thought it was a new tip or something, like add it to ya * muck * and it makes it stick better or something like that, ohhh no.

Its to keep his tools from rusting !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.  I had to ask didnt i.

Anyway room is almost done, will take some pics when hes done, and then onto the next stage, decorating

Badger

Ok room plastered, dry and ready for paint.
The colours have been chosen by the resident so dont shoot the messenger.
I will put an undercoat on first, this is a 50-50 mix of white matt paint.

propertyfag

That looks decent.

What room is that? There's a baby sink in the corner...

What is the deal with those sinks?? There used to be one in my first flat down in Bournemouth (in addition to the sink in the bathroom) ... I'd forgotten all about it!

V

propertyfag

No idea what it's about. It's very clinical...

Badger

It is a care home people, i wouldnt have one.  Its part of the Government white paper on how and what regs you need to meet to have a disabled person in your care

Fionalouisa

Its not that bad ! seeing that it is for an old person !

;D Good jobbie badger

propertyfag

Ahh good stuff, B.

Fionalouisa

Well my sister has just moved and my mums just about to put her house n the market . So ive been doing the 'family thing' and helping them , because they are both clueless .  ???

Also doing work on my own house ... actually seeing progress ! Which is refreshing .

So busy busy .

Badger

Ok guys the finished room.

As you can see its not fancy, its just pleasant, its a tenants room and no one said it had to be gold leaf, so simple, cheap and fast where my requirments and thats what i got.
The room experiance tells me, will have to be done again in 2 years.

propertyfag

That looks really good, B.

Thanks a lot for sharing all that. I'm really rubbish at DIY, so I wouldn't have known hardly any of that.

You got any other DIY projects lined up?

vwilson

Useful stuff that, plastering was cheap! Cheers for sharing

V

Badger

Yes faggy,
My next big project will be the garden log cabin and pool adjustment. that will be done in spring, but the prep will start sooner, ie concrete etc.  will do a running commentry on that as well.
Apart from that the outside of the house is going to be renderd flat to take away the old terralene look, i love flat smooth render on houses.  And the guttering needs to be done.
At my other place i need to get a new boiler installed and outside rendering also, oh and a new gate.
So not to much at all !!!!!
