The future for private landlords

Hi,

I have heard from a couple of other landlords that the government are looking to shut down private landlords who only own a small number of properties.  I'm not sure what a small number is in this context but let's say a landlord who owns one investment property.  The government want to do this apparently so the properties eventually fall into the hands of businesses and individuals who own multiple properties so the majority of property is owned by a very small number of people.  Is anyone else hearing or seeing moves from the government to indicate that is the case?

As far as I know there is no overt Govt policy to get rid of small independent landlords, but many landlords suspect that its their wish as this would increase the number of owner occupiers, which they tend to equate with Conservative voters.

Given that the government is likely to have about a month left, any of its policies seems a bit academic.

20% of households are living in properties managed by private individuals - there's no entry qualifications and no one even knows for sure who they are. That's not something it's easy to defend as a good idea.

So I can imagine most people would prefer that a completely random set of individual landlords might be replaced by a smaller number of larger providers. If only because it would be simpler to regulate and enforce.
