HI,
I'm currently renting a house, and the landlord is planning to remove the entire kitchen due to damp and mold on the external walls of the old Victorian house. The work will take 2-3 weeks to complete, or possibly longer due to the time it will take for the walls to dry. During this time, we will not have access to a usable kitchen or a washing machine. Is it reasonable to request that the landlord provide a portable electrical induction hob and a reduction in rent for the period when we will not have access to the kitchen? And if so, how much should the rent reduction be?
Thank you

Hippogriff

It's quite reasonable, yes.

In my world, I think the Landlord would have already offered you something in an effort to pre-empt you. At this stage you can highball your rent reduction request and be willing to come down to any counter offer, including the offer of a Section 21.

I would be either offering to pay for Airbnb or halving the rent to allow for using a laundry service and microwave meals .Personally I would not attempt such disruptive work until the place was vacated, unless this is something I was advised to do urgently.

Just joined......are you saying to the OP that he can proceed if he wants to face a S21?

Thank you all for your reply's. To be honest no offer has come from Landlord. I renewed the contract 4 month ago for 2 years, so a section 21 will be out of the question. The kitchen issue actually has been raised by me since I moved in 4 years ago, as the kitchen was at least 10y old, only recently, due to electric problems the damp and mould has been discovered behind cabinets. For the past 3 months, half of the kitchen has been pretty much unusable, not to say that i was using the washing machine with an extension lead due to the socket being rotten by damp, where by the electrician had to disconnect it. At first he seed that will offer compensation, however nothing so far has been materialised and the works starts next week. Half of the rent for Janury and the portable electrical induction hob is acceptable to ask for?

Why did you renew your contract,  rather than leave your options open to serve notice and find somewhere better to live?
